Frequently Asked Questions

What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)?

HBOT is a medical treatment where you breathe 100% pure oxygen while inside a pressurized chamber. This process allows your blood to carry up to 15–20 times more oxygen than normal, which helps repair damaged tissue, fight infection, and grow new blood vessels.

Is HBOT covered by Alberta Health Care (AHC)?

Yes, but only for specific medical conditions. At Canora Medical Clinic, we specialize in AHC-covered indications. If your condition is on the approved list, your treatments are covered.

How many sessions will I need?

Treatment is cumulative. While emergency cases (like carbon monoxide poisoning) may only need 1–2 sessions, chronic conditions like diabetic wounds or radiation injury typically require 20 to 40 sessions, usually scheduled once daily, five days a week.

What does it feel like inside the chamber?

As the chamber reaches its pressure (similar to a plane taking off), you may feel a “fullness” in your ears. Our technicians will teach you simple techniques, like yawning or swallowing, to “pop” your ears. Once at pressure, you can relax, watch TV, or nap.

How long does each treatment last?

A typical session lasts approximately 90 to 120 minutes. This includes the time to “dive” (pressurize), the treatment time at full pressure, and the “ascent” (depressurize).

Can I bring my phone or book inside?

For safety reasons, electronic devices (phones, tablets, e-readers) are not allowed in the chamber due to the high-oxygen environment. However, our chambers are clear, and we provide entertainment (like movies or TV) that you can watch from inside.

What should I wear?

Safety is our top priority. We provide 100% cotton scrubs for you to wear. Personal clothing, especially synthetics like polyester or silk, can create static electricity and are not permitted.

Are there items I cannot bring into the clinic?

To ensure a safe environment, please avoid wearing or bringing:

  • Makeup, hairspray, or perfume.
  • Petroleum-based products (Vaseline, lotions).
  • Jewelry, watches, or hearing aids.
  • Lighters or matches.

What if I am claustrophobic?

Our monoplace chambers are clear, allowing you to see out in all directions, which helps most patients feel comfortable. If you are very anxious, please let us know; our medical team can discuss options to help you relax during your treatment.

What conditions are typically covered?

Common conditions covered by Alberta Health Care include:

  • Diabetic foot ulcers (that haven’t healed in 30 days).
  • Delayed radiation tissue injury (e.g., following cancer treatment).
  • Chronic bone infections (Osteomyelitis).
  • Compromised skin grafts or flaps.
  • Sudden sensorineural hearing loss.

Do I need a doctor’s referral?

Yes. To ensure HBOT is the right medical path for you and to confirm insurance coverage, a referral from your family doctor or a specialist is required.
